Hippos in the Wami River
From marine giants to savannah predators
Home to Lions, Leopards, Elephants, and Buffaloes. While rare, spotting them near the beach is a photographer's dream.
The Wami River is famous for its high density of Hippos and giant Nile Crocodiles basking on the banks.
Over 220 species recorded. Look for the Mangrove Kingfisher, Fish Eagles, and Lesser Flamingos in the salt flats.
One of the few remaining major breeding sites for Green Turtles on the mainland Tanzania coast which nest on the beaches.
A must-do activity in Saadani. The boat safari takes you through the mangrove-lined Wami River. It's a birdwatcher's paradise and the best way to see hippos and crocodiles up close safely.
Best Time: Sunset cruises offer spectacular views as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the river gold.
Located within the marine extension of the park. During low tide, a beautiful white sandbank emerges from the turquoise ocean.
Activity: Perfect for a midday picnic, swimming, and snorkeling. Keep an eye out for dolphins playing in the waves nearby!
Saadani village was once an important coastal trading post. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a hub for ivory and slave trade.
Today, you can still see the ruins of the Old German Boma (government house) and other historical structures that tell the story of the swahili coast's turbulent past before it became a protected sanctuary.
Combine your Usambara hike with a relaxing safari at Saadani.
