The Usambara Mountains

Africa's Galapagos • Biodiversity Hotspot • Hiker's Paradise

A Realm of Clouds and Rainforests

Located in northeastern Tanzania, the Usambara Mountains are a part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains. Often compared to the Galapagos Islands for their exceptional level of endemism, this region is a living laboratory of evolution.

Why Visit Usambara?

Unlike the savannah safari circuits, Usambara offers a lush, cool climate retreat. It is a place to slow down, breathe fresh mountain air, and immerse yourself in nature and culture.

The range is divided into two blocks: the West Usambaras (centered around Lushoto, famous for hiking and history) and the East Usambaras (centered around Amani, famous for pure nature and scientific research).

  • Hiking: Endless trails through villages and forests.
  • Culture: Friendly Sambaa people and German colonial history.
  • Views: Panoramas stretching to Kilimanjaro and Mkomazi.

Cultural Heritage

The Sambaa (Wasambaa) are the main tribe of the Usambara Mountains. They are known for their warmth and hospitality. Agriculture is their backbone, and you will see intricate irrigation channels and terraced farms clinging to the steep slopes.

Lushoto (formerly Wilhelmstal) was a favored summer retreat for German colonial administrators due to its pleasant, cool weather. Walking through town, you can still see sturdy stone architecture from the German era.
